Freight Agent vs. Sub-Agent: What's the Difference?
FreightAgents.International helps experienced freight sales professionals evaluate U.S. brokerage partnerships based on real operating needs, contract terms and location. Use this guide to prepare better questions before making a move.
Direct freight agent
A direct independent freight agent typically has an agreement with the brokerage that holds the freight brokerage authority. The agent may sell, manage customers and sometimes handle shipments end to end, depending on the contract.
Sub-agent
A sub-agent generally operates under another agent or agency. This can provide mentorship or operating support, but may mean an additional commission layer and less direct access to brokerage decisions.
Compare more than the percentage
Review the share of actual gross profit after deductions, payment timing, customer ownership, credit approvals, technology fees, support availability and exit restrictions. A higher stated percentage does not always mean higher take-home earnings.
Before switching
Read your current agreement carefully. Customer solicitation restrictions and account ownership provisions may affect what can transfer. Do not assume that the shipper relationship is yours to move.
Next step
